1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
For consignment, a 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, showing 40,160 miles but unverifiable due to a mileage exemption on the title. In the sales brochure for 1986, this car’s color combination was used as the representative car for the SS line and shows the aggressive profile and sharp difference between it and the more pedestrian Monte Carlo.
Exterior
Black paint creates a monochromatic appearance as bumper covers, side mirrors, chin spoiler and wing all wear the dark hue for an aggressive and sinister look. It’s augmented by the triple taped stripes that encircle the car, ride over the wheel openings, but stop short from covering the rear fascia. The eggcrate grille is dressed up with a single orange pinstripe, the same orange used for the big proclamation on the doors and deck lid of MONTE CARLO SS. It’s an exterior spec that worked well in the 80’s and serves today as an example of colorful dress up addition to cars of the 70’s and 80’s. It also immediately differentiated you from the black Buicks running around at that time. The 15-inch wheels were specific to the SS and look good here. Imperfections include some chin scrapes on the spoiler, scratches on the rocker panel, and orange peel on a panel behind a front wheel.
Interior
G-bodies share the same basic configuration for the interiors and that starts with the door panels with ribbed velour inserts over molded plastic armrests over a carpeted lower panel and both doors look great. Tall gray velour buckets seats take their rightful place in this modern muscle car and continue the interior’s monochromatic presentation, and the rear bench is in near perfect condition. Up front, a sporty black steering wheel fronts an equally sporty but basic instrument panel, lined red, with red needled gauges that form a well coordinated esthetic. Red continues to line black panels, including the center stack where the common GM climate switchgear and Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio resides. Perhaps due to volume, Chevy kept the center console simple with a flat black panel and T-handle shifter, and this is often subject to scratches and marring which this console exhibits minimally. GM rubber mats cover the gray loop style carpet that washes over the floor and the fleece like headliner over foam board looks good with a few of the typical dimples. The trunk is fantastically clean, lined with a black cloth mat and containing a space-saving spare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean and original looking 305ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 180 horsepower. Behind it, GM’s 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission sends power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.73 gears. Power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Relatively clean underneath with the typical dust covering from use, a drop or two of oil on the pan and residual oil on a front support brace. The exhaust meets at a cat then splits to meet stock style mufflers before exiting through painted black pipes in back.
Drive-Ability
The comfortable cabin, familiar to G-body owners or those who grew up with our grandparents owning one, offers a pleasant place to pilot this SS on short jaunts to the local show or long highway cruises. The engine starts up smoothly and quietly and offers decent acceleration, sure footed confidence in straight aways and decent stability in turns, thanks to sway bars and other underbody bracing. As a potentially true low mileage car, everything worked as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is the poster car for 80’s styling with bold graphics, square edges, and V8 power and as such, their collectability seems to be on the uptick as more of them are taken off the road and reserved for special occasions like car shows and collections. This is a clean, stock example in a great color spec that was good enough to be highlighted in the ’86 catalog.
