Instant Center Relocation and Why It’s Needed

The basic information regarding instant center is the same for all cars, but for this discussion, we’ll focus on the factory-designed four-link system. The instant center (IC) is an imaginary point defined by extending the line of the upper and lower control arms forward until the two lines intersect. By changing the locating points of either the upper or lower control arms, the IC can be moved longitudinally (fore-aft) as well as vertically. Moving the instant center closer to the rear of the car reduces the leverage on the rear axle, reducing and eventually eliminating the car’s tendency to squat. There are two basic ways to change a Chevelle’s IC position. The OLD SCHOOL “No Hop” bars relocate the rear-axle mounting point of the upper control arms higher, which shortens the IC. The popular approach is to drop the lower rear mounting point of the bottom trailing arm. This is the approach taken by SOUTHSIDE MACHINE PERFORMANCE WITH OUR 4 HOLE RELOCATION BRACKETS.

As the instant center is moved toward the rear by altering the upper or lower control-arm mounting points, this has an effect on tire load, or the “hit” on the rear tire. If you are using a sticky rear tire like a wrinkle-wall M/T E.T. Street or a pair of slicks, moving the instant center rearward will apply more leverage to the rear suspension, reduce the squat, and take maximum advantage of the wrinkle-wall tires. If a set of stiffer-sidewall drag radials are used, positioning the instant center back from its stock location–but not as far back as for a wrinkle-wall tire–would be beneficial.

The height of the instant center will also move as you reposition the control arms, and this affects average tire loading on the rear tire. If you draw an imaginary line between the tire contact patch to the car’s center of gravity (CG), this is the 100 percent antisquat line. If the instant center is located above this line, antisquat will be more than 100 percent, while an instant center below the line is less than 100 percent antisquat. Theories abound on the proper location of the instant center, and this will change based on power, tire condition, track conditions, and perhaps a dozen other variables. This is just a hint of what you can learn about instant centers and traction. If you’re into maximum traction, there’s a ton of material to learn about putting the power to the ground.

Some options for bushings and ball joints

Like all lifted G Body A arms, you will need to provide new front control arm bushings and ball joints when installing. You can reuse your stock components, however they are usually 20+ years old and in poor condition. We will provide you with the part numbers to purchase new bushings and ball joints at your local auto parts store.

Your bushings will need to be pressed into the G Body A arms with a hydraulic H press. We recommend a 20 ton or larger press with a set of bushing installation spacers. This process should be performed by an experienced suspension specialist to ensure it is done correctly. If the bushings are installed wrong, you can risk bending and damaging the arms.

Metal spring spacer cups install under your factory coil springs

This package combo deal includes custom designed front and rear coil spring spacers. These spacers are designed for your car to install under the factory coil springs. Simply remove your springs and reinstall them with the lift cup on the bottom.

Why do I need longer G Body lift shocks when lifting my car?

When lifting the front and rear of your car, the stock shock absorbers are not long enough to provide proper operation. The shocks will often bottom out on bumps in the road and cause an unusually harsh ride. This can make your car ride poorly and experience handling issues as well.

When raising the suspension, UCL lift shocks will give you the extra travel you need to ride right. Our shocks are designed for lifts ranging from 3 inches up to 7 inches. The shocks simply bolt in place of your original units.

Durable gloss black powder coating lasts 100x longer than spray painted parts

When choosing lift cups and lift shocks for your car lift project, be sure to note the finish on the parts. All of Universal Car Lifts parts feature a durable gloss black powder coat finish. We start by cleaning the raw metal parts with a degreaser solution to facilitate a permanent finish bonding. The parts are then sent through a large oven and heated to encourage off gassing. This uniformly bakes off any impurities from the parts.

After pretreating the parts in an oven, the lift cups and lift shocks are professionally sprayed with a high end powder coat gun in a clean room spray booth. The parts are then sent back through the oven where they bake at the proper temperature to obtain a permanent bond.

This powder coat technique is the same method that new car manufacturers use to ensure their parts last virtually forever. It prevents rust from forming on the parts which will weaken the steel and cause premature failure.

Beware of “knock-off brand” sellers who use cheap hardware store spray paint to finish their parts. The finish will look like crap and the parts will almost immediately rust. The corrosion will eventually cause the parts to fail and could cause your rear end to fall out of your car.

UMI 1978-1988 GM G-Body Rear Lift Bar Set-Up- No Welding Required BLACK 3020-B

The UMI Performance lift bars replace your stock rear control arms adding tremendous track gains while not effecting ride height and keeping ride quality at its best. Lift bars are designed to work with axle torque to load the chassis of the car, forcing the rear wheels downward while pushing the tires into the ground for harder launches and improved 60-foot times. These bars are designed to greatly improve traction and reduce unwanted wheel hop. Constructed of boxed mild steel tubing, 0.120″ wall and 0.188″ thick mounting plates-completely CNC machined for exact tolerances and a superb fit. Lift bars feature grease-able Energy Suspension bushings that reduce bushing deflection but still make these arms a 100% street-able. Each lift bar features the correct provisions for adding a stock or aftermarket sway bar, sway bar holes are placed in the correct pattern to maintain the sway bar level with the rear end. All sway bar holes are reinforced with a 0.120″ wall thickness steel sleeve TIG welded and sanded into place. The rear mounting brackets feature two settings that allow the lift bar to be lowered 2″ or 3″ depending on user preference and the vehicles suspension set-up. Lift bars also correct lost geometry and correct instant center on a lowered vehicle. Add a set of our adjustable upper control arms for the maximal rear suspension set-up!

Installation: This kit can be either bolted or welded into place. All hardware and detailed installation instructions are included, hardware kit also includes (4) new metric grade 10.9 control arm bolts with nylon lock nuts. If bolting into place some drilling is required with this kit. Some hardware included not shown.
