The General Motors G-Body is one of the manufacturer’s most popular chassis, and includes cars such as the Chevrolet Malibu, Monte Carlo, and El Camino; the Buick Regal, Grand National, and the GNX; the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme; the Pontiac Grand Prix; and more. This traditional and affordable front engine/rear-wheel-drive design lends itself to common upgrades and modifications for a wide range of high-performance applications, from drag racing to road racing. Many of the vehicles GM produced using this chassis were powered by V-8 engines, and others had popular turbocharged V-6 configurations. Some of the special-edition vehicles were outfitted with exclusive performance upgrades, which can be easily adapted to other G-Body vehicles.

Knowing which vehicles were equipped with which options, and how to best incorporate all the best-possible equipment is thoroughly covered in this book. Selling some UMI Performance Inc. Lower A-Arms with Polyurethane Bushings. They were removed from my 1988 Trans Am GTA. Used them for about 200 miles, I never tracked or raced them. Still in good condition, does have some minor imperfections from installing them. One of them has some small oxidation spots but nothing serious.

They fit 82-92 F-Body & 78-88 G-Body.

Comes complete with castle nuts, news cotter pins, two sets of steering stops, bump stops, sway bar endlinks, and stickers. Does not come with Body to Control Arm Bolts as UMI sells them separately.

The weld on bracket kit deals with the instant center issue and upper control mounts.

This control arm kit from SSM Performance is designed to bolt an Ford Explorer rear end into GM G-Body, this includes Monte Carlo, Malibu, El Camino, Regal, Grand National, Grand Prix and Cutlass and many others. These upper control arms are built at the correct angle and length to attach to the the truss and chassis. The relocation bracket kit will allow for proper instant center (geometry) changes. The adjustable lower control arms allow you to center rear.

Common questions…

Q. What years of Explorer do I look for?

A. 1991-2001. Earlier models have drum brakes and later have disks.

Q. Do I need to narrow the rearend to fit.

A. NO.

Q. Does the rear need to be centered?

NO. The u-joint will work at the slight angle with no issues.

Q. How wide is the Explorer 8.8″?

A. The 8.8 will be a bit wider than stock. 3/4″ each side. Stock 7.5″ is 58″ and the Explorer 8.8″ is 59.5″.

Q. What wheel and backspacing is needed?

A. 4.5 BS on 8″ and 5.5″ on 9″. The Explorer rear will give you 6-3/8″ clearance between the frame rail and the wheel mounting surface.

Q. Do I need to redrill my axles and rotors?

A. No. Just use a Ford pattern wheel to keep cost down.

Q. Will I need to shorten my driveshaft.

A. NO. You will need to replace the rear u-joint.

Q. Can I still run tailpipes with the truss kit?

A. Yes, we have used 2-1/2″ and 3″ tailpipes with this.

How much power can the truss take? Unlike the common trusses that you see on the market that have only one piece of bent steel that has to be tied into the differential cover to make it suitable for use, our trusses have a 1/4″ main hoop structure and then have two 3/16″ boxed gussets all of which is made from 100,000 min yield steel to make them incredibly strong. You will also notice that the boxed gussets are narrower than the main hoop. We did this so that you will have no butt welds but have the stronger T weld. We intentionally do not have unnecessary material added to the top of the truss. Our truss top plate is made from 1/2″ and if you add more material to the top it just makes it hard to achieve the proper instant center geometry. We have tested the model in Solid Works Simulation Professional (computer load testing program) and real world test and feel this is the way to go. The addition of the welded boxed 3/16 Gussets increases the welding surface area of the truss on your axle tubes to distribute the loads that your axle will encounter. With the increased foot print of our trusses they will also add structural rigidity to your axle and help prevent your axle from bending and warping. This truss system was designed with a state of the art 3D CAD software and plasma cut on a cnc table. Like all of our products our trusses are made from high-strength American steel. If you shop around you will find that our truss systems are the best product for your four and three link suspension needs. Completely over built for automotive applications, as are our control arms. They have been tested at 1500 HP and 1300 lbs of torque (540 BBC 12 PSI on methanol), If you are making more than that I would suggest going to a tube chassis or let us build you something to better suit your needs.

Rear control arms are one of the most important suspension modifications that can be done to your GM vehicle. Stock control arms are on the borderline of “junk”, bushing deflection and rusting weak stamped material add for traction loss and poor handling ability. Our tubular control arms are designed to give you the best of both worlds, whether your car is a weekend cruiser or a weekend track addict we got you covered. The included Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings are an excellent improvement over OEM rubber bushings, while adding ride improvements they also work excellent to reduce traction loss. Save time and headache when trying to build your own notch with our kit.

We can CNC cut this in any thickness material you need. You will need to contact the shop for  the other sizes. 

CNC cut to fit all G Body frames. Made from Premium Grade 3/16″” (.188″) Pickled and oiled steel (HRPO). 

This comes with both right and left frame sections and ends to bridge the gap from the notch.

This is thicker and stronger than the factory frame.

This kit requires metal fab experience and can be done in the garage with a decent welder.

Will need a welder, hammer, die grinder and a bench vice.

Due to the Lack of consistency with the G Body frame over the years some minor trimming and will be necessary.

(1) Raise car to a comfortable working height using the method of your choice. Follow applicable safety procedures.

(2) Locate the existing rear frame that will be sliced and re-boxed  

(3) SSM Performance suggests marking the length of your cut based on the wheel you are trying to accommodate. Mark a long enough frame section to allow your wheel proper clearance.

(4) The depth of the notch is also dependent on the desired wheel clearance. As a good starting point, SSM suggests slicing the frame flush with the inner fender.

(5) Keep in mind it is always best to cut less to begin with and grind to exact fit rather than trying to cut to exact dimensions.

 (6) Use a vise and a hammer to bend the four smaller frame plates until they match the shape of the notch ends. Tack weld small plates into place.

(7) In preparation for welding, trim the large plates so they slightly overlap the small end plates.

(8) Before welding the large main plates, clamp them into place and check for good seams to place weld bead. The plate is slightly oversized to allow proper fit to all 78-88 G-body frames. Grind large plate for perfect fit.

(9) First, properly clean the existing frame of dirt and rust to expose bare metal for the welding process. Weld small end plates in place first, and then weld the larger plates.

(10) Installation is complete.

Our beefy 1″ solid rear sway bar is designed to reduce body roll, understeer and increase corning capabilities resulting in a more balanced suspension. This rear sway bar also works excellent to keep your vehicle level and straight during those hard launches. Our sway bar is manufactured from 1″ solid 4140 chrome moly steel, heat treated and formed as one piece to insure maximum strength and performance. This 100% jig built, bolt-in brace ties the rear upper shock mounts together to share the load and stiffen the chassis.     Brand new UMI Performance part # 2406 engine mount slider plates. These are for installing an LS based engine in your 78-88 G body and 82-92 F body. Included are a set of 4th gen camaro motor mounts powdercoated hammertone black, with energy suspension red poly bushings.


    Everything is brand new, never installed. Some of the powdercoat has chipped off of the motor mounts. These mounts are $150 new with the hardware and the poly mounts and clamshells are about the same from Hooker. This is a great deal for someone looking at a cheap ls swap mount kit.
