These upper control arms are built at the correct angle to attach to the G-Body chassis. The relocation bracket kit will allow for proper instant (geometry) changes. The adjustable lower control arms allow you to center rear. These control arms are a must any time this swap is being completed. Using factory control arms will cause drastic rear end bind and incorrect driveline angle, this leads to traction loss, vibrations and unsafe handling.

Instant Center Relocation and Why It’s Needed

The basic information regarding instant center is the same for all cars, but for this discussion, we’ll focus on the factory-designed four-link system. The instant center (IC) is an imaginary point defined by extending the line of the upper and lower control arms forward until the two lines intersect. By changing the locating points of either the upper or lower control arms, the IC can be moved longitudinally (fore-aft) as well as vertically. Moving the instant center closer to the rear of the car reduces the leverage on the rear axle, reducing and eventually eliminating the car’s tendency to squat. There are two basic ways to change a Chevelle’s IC position. The OLD SCHOOL “No Hop” bars relocate the rear-axle mounting point of the upper control arms higher, which shortens the IC. The popular approach is to drop the lower rear mounting point of the bottom trailing arm. This is the approach taken by SOUTHSIDE MACHINE PERFORMANCE WITH OUR 4 HOLE RELOCATION BRACKETS.

As the instant center is moved toward the rear by altering the upper or lower control-arm mounting points, this has an effect on tire load, or the “hit” on the rear tire. If you are using a sticky rear tire like a wrinkle-wall M/T E.T. Street or a pair of slicks, moving the instant center rearward will apply more leverage to the rear suspension, reduce the squat, and take maximum advantage of the wrinkle-wall tires. If a set of stiffer-sidewall drag radials are used, positioning the instant center back from its stock location–but not as far back as for a wrinkle-wall tire–would be beneficial.

The height of the instant center will also move as you reposition the control arms, and this affects average tire loading on the rear tire. If you draw an imaginary line between the tire contact patch to the car’s center of gravity (CG), this is the 100 percent antisquat line. If the instant center is located above this line, antisquat will be more than 100 percent, while an instant center below the line is less than 100 percent antisquat. Theories abound on the proper location of the instant center, and this will change based on power, tire condition, track conditions, and perhaps a dozen other variables. This is just a hint of what you can learn about instant centers and traction. If you’re into maximum traction, there’s a ton of material to learn about putting the power to the ground.

These control arms are supplied adjustable for easy on-car adjustability to set correct pinion angle and allow adjustment for installation if needed. Adjustments are made using an aircraft quality 4140 Chrome Moly heat treated adjuster and QA1 spherical bearing rod end. The QA1 rod end allows rear end free movement when high handling, auto cross or road race is a concern; it also works excellent as a drag race item by eliminating rear end bind. Upper control arms feature TIG welded construction, 4140 Chrome Moly tube adaptors to ensure thread durability and brilliant powder coat.

GM A-Body cars went through a transformation in 1978, and although GM redesignated rear-wheel drive A-Body models as G-Bodies beginning in 1982, the platform remained relatively unchanged until 1988. The 1978-88 A & G-Body segment contains some of the more iconic muscle cars of that era, making them prime candidates for an LS swap. Trans-dapt Performance Products has been manufacturing engine mounts since the 60’s, and they focus on products that simplify the mating of automotivie components that were’nt designed to fit together in the first place. This engine swap mount kit is one of those efffort-saving products. The kit is designed to install an LS engine into 1978-87 Caballero, Cutlass, El Camino, Grand Prix, and Regal, or 1978-88 Monte Carlo vehicle models. Handwelded in Trans-Dapt’s Whittier, California manufacturing plant, this kit includes engine adapter brackets, rubber frame pads, and all Grade 8 hardware to install everything, including a connector bolt. To ensure a proper driveline angle, we strongly recommend the use of Trans-Dapt’s 6422 transmission crossmember (for use with T56, TH400, 4L60/65/70/80E transmissions). To lay a great foundation for maximum power output, we recommend the use of Hedman’s mid-length LS swap header sfor this same project.

-LS Swap Motor Mount Bracket allow the installation of any 3rd or 4th generation LS series engine into Chevrolet / GMC trucks and SUVs frame configured for small or big block GM engines. 

-This bracket kit eliminates clearance and fitment issues when installing your LS engine by providing the adjustable mount configuration which allows for 2″ forward and 1/2″ back mounting positions.  

-Please use an oil pan from a GM truck LS engine for perfect clearance of steering components. These will allow use of low mount alternators but the rearward adjustability will be limited.

-Low mounted A/C compressors from GM Trucks will fit, but rearward adjustability will NOT be possible. 

-Also, low mount compressor units from the Corvette, Camaro, or Cadillac CTS-V will NOT clear properly.

Please note: a large 2- row aluminum radiator will cool better the a 3-row or even 4-row aluminum radiator. Aluminum is NOT LIKE COPPER where more tubes/rows means more cooling. It is the size of the tubes/rows that provide the best cooling. The highest cooling efficiency is with 2 rows 1 inch to 1&1/8 inch wide. Do your research and you will find any major name brand radiator shop will be building them with 2-large rows. Usually at a premium price. This radiator is every bit the quality of any high dollar radiator with a lifetime warranty against any manufacturer defect. Remember Just because they can bend and weld aluminum into the shape of a radiator does not mean it will cool properly.
